hen Jamie Hoffman makes a wedding cake for her clients, she tries to dream up something out of
the ordinary for couples, not typical,
overused designs. Hoffman, who owns Yuma Couture Cakes in Yuma, has
been making cakes in her studio in Yuma for the past five years, but she has been baking all her life, she said.
When meeting with a couple for the first time, she said,
she usually tries to steer them away from “popular-style” cakes.
“I don’t do anything you would ever see on a grocery store
shelf,” she said. Everything she makes is custom made for her clients,
and she tries to do something that is significant in some way to the individual. For example, in some instances she has brides send her photos of their wedding invitations, dresses or jewelry to somehow incorporate that into the cake design.

“I try to think as
far outside of the box as possible because there are enough cakes out there with ribbons and dots out there to choke a goat. I want to do some- thing as interesting and creative as possible.”
Hoffman recalled that one of her most unique wedding
cakes was one with a ball and chain draped across the entire cake.
“The couple was so fun and they meant it in a joking way.
I think they were just trying to think of the most outra- geous thing they could do.”
When making a cake with flowers, she said she tries to
make ones that are whimsical, like fantasy flowers. “Typically, I don’t really even like making real flowers
