sioned to celebrate the firm’s 40th birthday,
shows a staggering 53% of those asked believe
they have already done all they can to minimise
their impact on the environment, although in
many cases this is limited to having a water butt
or using the council’s composting service.
B&Q’s director of social responsibility, Matt
Sexton, said: “Something’s got to change – our
attitudes, or the climate.
“This report shows just one in ten of us are
planning improvements to make our homes
more sustainable. What’s most worrying
though is that the research suggests more than
half of us believe we are already doing every-
thing we can to minimise our impact on
the environment.
“In reality, we all need to make significant
changes to our homes if we are to meet the gov-
ernment’s commitment to reduce our emissions
by 80% by 2050.”
More than 1,000 people were asked their
views for the research. The report found
58% of us believe it is our responsibility to
minimise the impact of our homes yet also
showed us to be focusing on the simplest or
cheapest changes, which are not necessarily
the most effective.
Given a list of several eco-improvements,
on average, people considered fewer than
three worthwhile with the easiest or cheapest
being the most popular. More than half of those
surveyed would consider reducing their water
consumption at home, with recycling rainwater
top of the list, followed by home composting
and growing our own veg.
Sexton added: “Our homes are responsible
for almost a third of the UK’s carbon emissions
