for the first new wave of dredging, for
the port of Recife. The first PND con-
tract was won by Somar, which is the
Brazilian subsidiary of Van Oord, and
dredging has already begun there.

The aim is to carry out some of the
first capital dredging programmes for
more than a decade in Brazil’s key ports
to that bigger, more efficient vessels can
start calling.
The PND budget is supposedly ring-
fenced, but some in the dredging indus-
try are not happy with the speed at which
the programme is progressing and fear that
concerns in Brasilia about the interna-
tional credit crunch may see some of the
projects delayed. All the same, the prom-
ise of the cash has brought all the main
dredging contractors, including Jan de
Nul, Boskalis, DEME, as well as Van Oord,
into the reckoning for the tenders.
