Energy is released by the earthquake.
Creating a Monster Wave A devastating earthquake near Japan triggered a powerful tsunami.
Working Together Other engineers designed and built safer skyscrapers. T ey made these skyscrapers so that they swayed during the quake instead of falling. Quakes oſt en topple skyscrapers. T ey also built many skyscrapers
on rollers. T at way the buildings slid back and forth during the quake and tsunami, but didn’t fall. Around the world, engineers are
coming up with better ways to warn people about earthquakes and make safer buildings. Scientists hope to learn more, too, so that they can give people earlier warnings.
