DC” was honored to have Four Star Admiral Michelle Howard pay them a visit. “Chess Girls DC” is an all-girls chess club founded by Robin Ramson and Quito Swan, Ph.D. Robin’s husband Rob is also an active supporter of the club, serving as an advisor to its Board of Directors. Robin has been sponsoring a “Women in Leadership” series and trying to get women in leadership positions in the area to come to speak to the girls about how “commitment and focus to your goals gets you so far in so many areas of life.” Robin tells the girls that, “In chess, you have to be focused and committed to the goal of checkmate.”


Saving Captain Phillips Admiral Howard has had an extremely distinguished career. She is currently the 38th Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) making her the U.S. Navy’s second-highest ranking officer. As the VCNO, she is responsible for the safety and

welfare of every sailor and ship in the U.S. Navy. She has also achieved many “firsts” in her career. She was the first female graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy to be selected for flag rank. She was the first African- American woman to command a U.S. ship, the USS Rushmore, and to achieve three-star rank and the rank of Admiral in the U.S. Navy. In 2009, she led the rescue mission to save Captain Richard Phillips and his cargo ship from Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. Tom Hanks would later star as Capt. Phillips in the movie about the incident and rescue.

saw this documentary on television and it was about a service academy,” she began. “It was about people doing leadership things and marching around. Wow, that is a neat
