around our region and support one another. That’s what it’s all about.” Community members and contractors do- nated time and materials to help establish the shop at 500 N. Washington #4. They opened their doors—debt free—on Oct. 2, 2012, with the idea to “celebrate the sweetness of life with grace and taste.” “We can bake it, but it takes a community to support it,” Hanson said. Paula Beiland, of Weatherford, Okla., is a loyal customer who stops by to pick up treats for co-workers in Watonga, Okla., and for a local Bible study class. She said she likes the store’s welcoming environment and its mis- sion to give back to the children. “Everyone is very pleasant and of course everything is very good,” Beiland said. “It works both ways; you give and get.” There are 12 employees who help create cupcakes, scones, cookies, elephant ears, but- ter bars, cheesecakes, and more. With over 300 cupcake flavor combinations, a handful of different tastes are featured each day the shop is open, Tuesday through Saturday. There is also a Creation Station, and cupcakes baked in jars can now be shipped. The No. 1 seller is Death by Chocolate. The cupcakes for each day are posted on their Facebook page.

“I like working here because I get to use my creativity and help with the mission of feed- ing kids,” April Phillips, Sweetness Factory manager, said. “There’s no better blessing than to work for a business that helps kids.” Phillips worked with Hanson creating wed- ding cakes before the shop opened. The staff has also volunteered at the Regional Food Bank in Oklahoma City. “My employees all take ownership. They work for a lot of love… We’re a little big fam- ily,” Hanson said.

Sweetness Factory has a saltwater taffy bar with 22 flavors, 72 bulk candies, and a wide range of novelty and gourmet candies and chocolates. A gift-making room is set up too. Hanson’s health is better and her passion to feed continues. She is now helping to es- tablish the Weatherford Food and Resource Center, due to open in 2016.
