Gates, Foundry Discovered in Hometown of the Bible’s Goliath


In August, an archaeological research team working near the Biblical city of Gath in central Israel announced the discovery of the city gate to the ancient Palestinian city. Dating back to nearly 1000 BC, the city was the hometown of Goliath, the champion Philistine fighter who was killed by David, the future king of Israel, in one of the Bible’s most famous stories. In addition to the city gate, archaeologists also discovered an iron foundry, temple and fortification walls—all signs the city was of high status and influence before its destruction in 830 BC.
