Maxim Kuschnerov

Organisation: Huawei Technologies Role: Director of R&D Based in: Munich, Germany

The evolution of CMOS nodes is becoming prohibitively expensive and the supply chain increasingly monopolised, believes Maxim Kuschnerov. ‘Optical computing can provide orders of magnitude higher processing speeds and lower power consumption per bit, if research overcomes the issues of scalability of optical components. While optics will not be able to replace electronics anytime soon, new use cases must be discovered for these new optical acceleration engines,’ he said. Kuschnerov’s research group is ‘deeply engaged’ in future optical access networks

June Sang Lee

Organisation: University of Oxford Role: PhD (DPhil) Student Based in: Oxford Education: BEng Electrical and Electronic

While June Sang Lee joined Oxford University’s Advanced Nanoscale Engineering (ANE) group to work on phase- change photonics for novel optoelectronic/ nanophotonic devices, he believes energy applications will figure large in photonics research in the near term. ‘Although solar cells have been a favourite

topic for past decades, the current focus of photonics is still more into displays, information processing, computing, and optical communication that utilise bandwidths of optical domains. However, I

believe there is plenty of room for photonics to take a role in energy applications. For instance, “radiative cooling”,’ he said. Integration and scale are two areas that Lee believes need to be overcome: ‘While the size of the photonic chip itself is reduced to extreme spatial scale (e.g. sub- wavelength-sized), the size of optical setup, such as lasers, microscope, or spectrometer, cannot be easily reduced or integrated with other photonic components.’ Find Lee at linkedin.com/in/june-sang-jason- lee-804064b3 or nanoeng.materials.ox.ac.uk.

Carlos Lee

Organisation: EPIC – European Photonics Industry Consortium Role: Director general

As part of his work leading EPIC, which represents almost 800 members in 33 countries, Lee works to ensure a vibrant and competitive ecosystem by maintaining a strong international network and acting as a catalyst and facilitator for technological and commercial advancement. He has a strong background in

microelectronics through several management positions held at the international association, SEMI. Here, he was responsible for its International Standards programme in Europe, managed technical and executive programmes, and

together with the advisory board advocated for a more competitive semiconductor and photovoltaic manufacturing industry. Lee is confident of continuous photonics

technological breakthroughs in the future, but emphasised the importance of translating research to manufacturable products so that the true impact of such breakthroughs can be felt. He advises those embarking on a career in photonics research to attend as many events as possible. ‘Your worth is your network,’ he said. Find Lee online at linkedin.com/in/carloslee.

Education: BSc, MSc at TU Munich, PhD at the University of the Federal Armed Forces, Munich

and has begun taking the first steps towards optical fixed infrastructure for the 6G wireless network generation. ‘Indoor wireless access is likely to disrupt

beyond WiFi and open up the opportunity for future hybrid optical/wireless networks. We expect first results for future indoor networking in this domain in 2023, which could change the whole paradigm of indoor communication,’ he said. You can find Kuschnerov online at linkedin. com/in/kuschnerov/. He plans to attend OFC, ECOC, NGON, Laser World of Photonics and Photonic Days Jena.
