NO-UK SUBSEA CABLE SYSTEM

ACHIEVES 800GB/S LINE RATE NO-UK, the submarine cable system between Norway and the UK, has achieved a record-breaking 800Gb/s line rate, which could help to deliver greater capacity, faster speeds and a greener offering through lower energy consumption. NO-UK’s open submarine cable system,

featuring eight fibre pairs, runs for 700km between Stavanger (Norway) and Newcastle (UK) and is the shortest low-latency direct submarine route between the two nations. Te system was developed by Altibox Carrier, which owns and operates fibre-optic cables, and supplied by Xtera, a turnkey provider of subsea systems. Te project is managed by specialist consultants SubSea Networks. Altibox selected Ciena’s GeoMesh

Extreme, leveraging Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 Extreme technology and 6500 Packet-Optical Platorms, supporting up to 35Tb/s per fibre pair. Te design and cable validation exercise was conducted according to the new International Telecoms Union (ITU) submarine cable standard for open cables, known as ITU-T G.977.1. OPENREACH TO CREATE AND FILL

4,000 JOBS THIS YEAR UK network provider Openreach is to create and fill more than 4,000 jobs during 2022, including around 3,000 apprenticeships, as part of an investment drive in its network, people and training. Te new recruits will be based throughout

the UK, working to build and connect customers to the company’s fibre broadband. Te company said it is commited to building

a more diverse and inclusive workforce in an industry that has traditionally been very white and male dominated. Last year, the company atracted 600 women into trainee engineering roles, thanks partly to employing language experts to transform its job adverts and descriptions, making them gender neutral. Te provider said the new roles offer a competitive starting salary and long-term career prospects, but candidates don’t need any formal qualifications to apply. Clive Selley, CEO of Openreach, said: ‘I’m

proud we’re continuing to invest in our people, having hired and trained more than 8,000 new engineers over the last two years. We want to reflect the communities we serve and give opportunities to people from all backgrounds, so I’m encouraged we’ve recruited more women and minority groups this year compared to last, but we’ve got much more to do in an industry that hasn’t been very diverse historically.

THE Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, said:

‘I firmly believe in supporting women in STEM and am delighted to see Openreach doubling the number of women in trainee engineering roles last year. Investing in creating thousands of new jobs and apprenticeships will also boost our mission to level-up communities, support economic growth and give more people across the country the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to fulfil their potential.’ Andy Kerr, deputy general secretary at the

Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: ‘Te CWU welcomes the creation of 4,000 new jobs this year, including 3,000 apprenticeships. We have worked with the company to ensure all those employed will have access not only to good quality jobs on appointment, but also career structures in the future.’

Norway. We wanted it to deliver the highest bandwidth and capacity available across a submarine network in a sustainable way, and Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme, combined with Xtera’s unique wide-bandwidth and low-noise repeater design, has achieved exactly that. Te network has exceeded our expectations in every way and sets the standard for future connectivity between Norway and the UK.’ Ian Clarke, vice president of global

submarine solutions at Ciena, added: ‘Ciena continues to push the limits of submarine cable networks, achieving 800Gb/s line rate – another industry first. With more capacity and lower cost-per-bit, lower power consumption and lower operational costs, the solution provides a modern and environmentally friendly network for customers.’
