and received the prestigious Arthur Schawlow award. He was a Fellow of LIA and many other Professoressional societies. Professor Mazumder began his academic

journey with a baccalaureate degree in metallurgical engineering from Calcutta University in 1972. He earned his diploma (D. I. C.) and PhD in process metallurgy from Imperial College London in 1978 under Professor William Steen’s laser sharp guidance. His Professoressional career began in the

USA as a post-doctoral research scholar at the University of Southern California for a short time and then he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign. After 16 years he took the distinguished position of the Robert H. Lurie Professoressorship at the University of Michigan. He held this position for 25 years and unfortunately passed away on 10 April 2021 while in service. Professor Mazumder leaves behind

an extraordinary history with numerous awards and achievements. In addition to receiving the prestigious Arthur Schawlow award from LIA, he was the recipient of many other awards. He was an elected member of the USA National Academy of

Engineering; was a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering; received the William T. Ennor Award for manufacturing from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); received the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award from the ASME; and received the Distinguished University Innovator Award from the University of Michigan. He also co-authored

two books, Theory and Application of Laser Chemical Vapor Deposition, and Laser Materials Processing. While pursuing academic excellence in the field of direct metal deposition (DMD) technology, he also demonstrated entrepreneurial skill by establishing a company to commercialise it. Professor Mazumder was also an

excellent teacher. He educated and trained many students who are now well-established faculty members in various universities, accomplished

Professoressionals in different industries, or meticulous scientists in government laboratories. Just like his own mentor Professor Steen, he leaves behind a legacy of bright scientists and engineers throughout the world, carrying on his teachings and research principles. He touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed. Though he has passed, his spirit and legacy will remain alive. l
