Unless you have been living under a rock these past few months, you will see that coronavirus now dominates the headlines, and are probably wondering how it could affect you and your business. Some of those who planned to attend

Photonics West in San Francisco had this question answered at the beginning of February, when a number of delegates and exhibitors, including Lumentum, had to cancel their plans due to travel restrictions. Thankfully, the show still went ahead as planned. A number of presentations covered the

development of systems and techniques for performing additive manufacturing with both pure copper and copper alloys – a trend I have seen popping up increasingly over the past year. Andy Extance explores this emerging technique further on page 12. Speaking of copper, Trumpf, Nuburu

and Laserline were all at Photonics West discussing how they have recently upped the power of their visible-wavelength lasers, which can be used to process this challenging reflective material. You can read more about this on page 8. In addition, you can learn about the new polishing technique that Florent Husson and his Alphanov colleagues spoke about at Photonics West on page 32. It uses a high-power laser, a scanner and robotics to process large 3D structures. Additional content includes

maintenance advice on page 20, as laser firms share with Keely Portway what they do to minimise the need to call out engineers for repairs. Lastly, on page 16, Greg Blackman finds out how the emergence of five-axis laser machining is causing headaches for a developer of software for laser systems.
