As we approach the end of 2019 there is an environmentally friendly feel to the final issue of the year. Energy efficiency is the topic of the HPC feature on page 4. As demand for computational resources increases HPC users are finding ways to further reduce their electricity bills. The tech focus for this issue looks at

software tools for HPC users, beginning on page 7. This feature looks at the role of software to manage and optimise HPC systems to ensure they run at maximum capacity. The focus shifts to AI and ML on page 10, as we take a look at a collaboration between Achronix and Bittware to produce a new FPGA platform designed for cloud, edge computing and AI/ML applications. This new FPGA platform is directly aimed at high compute applications, typically run on GPUs today, so there could be increased competition in the AI and ML markets. Laboratory informatics content begins on page 12, with Sophia Ktori’s feature on data formats in the laboratory. As data volumes in the laboratory increase there is also increased value in this data. Making sure it is accessible and readily available to an organisation is a key consideration. On page 16, Claire Sansom revisits her

piece from last year, which looked at the fight against antibacterial resistance and the computational tools that are making this possible. The environmental theme continues on page 20, with our modelling and simulation feature on wind energy. Robert Roe takes a look at the advanced simulation tools that enable new innovations in this market, which is becoming increasingly competitive.
