DROPPING TEMPERATURES
Tis issue of Scientific Computing World has a distinctly cool look and theme, with dedicated HPC coverage of glacial ice research and a review of the latest cooling technologies. On page 4, we explore research carried out
at the University of Alaska to map the flow of glacial ice in Greenland. Te researchers created a model that simulates the movement of the ice fluid and its temperature, to understand better the effects of climate change on the movement of glaciers. On page 8, we interview several experts
on cooling technology and find that – in the face of increasingly dense computing solutions – many users are turning to the next generation of cooling solutions such as direct liquid, warm water and immersion cooling technologies. Te HPC section of this issue also includes
18
a report on the ISC conference, and a review of the Student Cluster Competition that took place at the event is on page 14. Our informatics feature focuses on a

convergence between traditional laboratory informatics and AI and HPC technologies, as Sophia Ktori explores the use of deep learning and AI research in life sciences. She finds that there is huge potential for this technology to accelerate research in both healthcare and drug development. Tis issue's simulation feature on page 26
focuses on wind energy and the soſtware used in the placement and design of turbines. As they are increasingly placed in tough environments such offshore installations, it is necessary to ensure that designs are right the first time to reduce the need for maintenance and refits.
