INVESTING: IT’S ALL IN THE MIND

At portfolio institutional, we like to give you something to think about. Each month we search for the best new investment ideas, offer insight into changing market trends and explain what could be lying in wait for institutional investors in the coming years. We do this despite knowing that much of what we write could be ignored or misinterpreted. This, according to the growing volume of research into behavioural economics, is down to human nature. The mysteries of how investors’ make decisions are being unravelled thanks to the lure of a Nobel Memorial Prize. It appears that decision-making is more likely to be influ- enced by a person’s psyche than a company’s fundamentals, a growing body of research claims. Some of us are confident investors, while others are cautious and we all have our biases. This means that we may interpret or use information in different ways. Contrary to popular belief, the facts rarely speak for themselves. Therefore, understanding what makes us tick could be one of the most valuable lessons an investor learns. With this in mind, our cover story this month focuses on the relationship between investors and their mind, to discover why we react differently than our colleagues sit- ting around us to the same news story or company fundamentals. The psychology les- son starts on page 22. Hopefully, this is one article that you will not ignore or misinterpret.
