HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Welcome to our first edition of 2021, which marks a new chapter after what proved to be one of the most eventful years in living memory.

There are reasons for optimism that some form of normality will return in the months ahead. We have a trade deal with the EU and two Covid vaccines approved by the UK regulator bringing the global total to six. But there are concerns. We are told the virus has mutated and that we are yet to see the peak of the pandemic. Indeed, as I write this, another national lockdown has started. So, it could get worse before it gets better. Yet such fears have not stopped us from looking at what might be lying in wait for investors in the months ahead. From page 24, we look at how the markets could per- form in 2021, while our cover story gauges opinion on what the main ESG trends could be with biodiversity, alpha activism and a greater emphasis on the S in ESG set to fea- ture in conversations with investors. You can read the thoughts of our ESG Club in greater depth from page 36. Elsewhere, the pandemic has highlighted the defensive nature of healthcare. Many will be tempted to look at the market, given the size of the orders placed for the vaccines cre- ated by Pfizer and AstraZeneca. However, investors need to tread carefully as while the rewards can be high, the risks are just as high, if not higher. We look at what you need to know from page 54. Away from assessing future investment trends, we look at pooling’s first five years. We have brought the leaders of four local authority pools together to discuss the challenges they have faced and what issues they are preparing to meet in the next five years. You can read what they have to say from page 48. We also catch up with Ian McKnight, the chief investment officer of the Royal Mail Pen- sion Plan, who explains some of the unique perks that posties’ can enjoy when they retire (pages 20-23). Finally, portfolio institutional marks its 10th anniversary in January (pages 18-19). To celebrate this milestone, 10 of our favourite features and interviews will appear on our website throughout the month, so watch out for them at portfolio-institutional.co.uk. Hope you enjoy it.

Stay safe.
