Cheap fashion carries a high price. Just ask the families of the 1,134 workers in Bangla- desh who died six years ago when the build- ing they were making clothes in collapsed.

The jeans and t-shirts made in the Rana Plaza factory were due to appear on the shelves of several retailers in the developed world, one of which was Primark. The com- pany is known for selling dresses and jump- ers cheaper than many of its neighbours on Britain’s high streets because it doesn’t have advertising campaigns to fund.

This view changed when news came through that the eight-storey factory was constructed using substandard materials and that several floors were built without permission. There have also been allega- tions that workers were locked in during their shifts.
