German conference & awards

INFLATION AND IMPACT INVESTING HIGH ON THE AGENDA OF GERMAN INVESTORS

“Global upheaval, investment transitions” was the theme of the annual investment conference and awards held in June by portfolio institutionell, our German sister publication. Mona Dohle and Daniela Englert report.

While German and UK institutional investors may no longer share the same passport colours, the topics dominating their agenda are remarkably similar, as portfolio institutionell's investment awards and annual conference, held at Berlin’s Waldorf Astoria, highlight. The conference and awards attracted more than 200 attendees, including some of Germany's most senior asset owners.

A global economy undergoing rapid changes, geopolitical rebalancing, inflation and impact investing were some of the key themes discussed at the conference. The event was opened by Patrick Eisele, editor-in-chief of portfolio institutionell, and Sissi Hajtmanek, a broadcast journalist and news reader, who high- lighted the scope of changes and challenges the global economy is undergoing, from the energy crisis to the loss of biodiversity and the growth of geopolitical rivalries with China. They also emphasised the role of ESG in the due diligence process. Subsequent panels discussed the crisis in energy markets, the loss of biodiversity as a negative side effect of the climate crisis, and opportunities to collaborate with German state investment bank KfW on that front.

Alternatives to conventional asset classes were also a key theme of the event, with a selection of panels exploring the opportuni- ties in listed real assets, infrastructure and real estate. Never- theless, fixed income and equity continue to account for the bulk of the average German institutional portfolio and speak-
