REGIONAL OVERVIEW OF 2018 PARTICIPANTS

For The Global Family Office Report 2018 (GFOR), Campden Wealth researchers surveyed 311 family offices from around the world and conducted 25 qualitative interviews with family office principals and executives—the largest sample size since Campden Wealth’s research began. In its simplest form, a family office

is a private office for a family of significant wealth, whose purpose can range from handling key family assets and core holdings, to serving as a central hub for a family’s legacy, governance and succession. In the latest report we found the

family office sector is accelerating rapidly in sophistication and wealth. The average family office that participated in the GFOR has an average of $808 million in assets under management (AUM) and roughly half of them (48%) reported their AUM had increased over the year. It found family offices are

getting bolder in their investment strategy, continuing a trend towards higher risk, more illiquid investments in pursuit of returns. This was highlighted in Asia-Pacific where 40% pursued growth-focused strategies in 2018, compared to 39% of North American and 21% of European family offices. The strategy paid off as Asia-Pacific recorded the highest average return performance of 16.4%, compared to the 15.9% and 15% recorded by North America and Europe respectively.
