Maintaining the standard

D

uring such a period of political and commercial uncertainty as the one the UK is currently going through, there’s an inevitable amount of associated doubt both in industry and amongst consumers about standards compliance requirements. However, regardless of what deals are struck and what trade

agreements are met with the European Union and beyond, there’s no doubt that there’ll be no relaxation of the compliance landscape. Standards applicable to UK markets will match or exceed the requirements of the EU and the need to conform to the regulations of other markets will remain unchanged. Test houses will play an increasingly important role in acting as agents for

foreign standards organisations and easing the path of UK manufacturers in reaching overseas markets. This is a service that isn’t new to accreditation companies and standards testing laboratories as they’ve long been a focus of expertise in unravelling the complexities of overseas regulations, the requirements for gaining approvals against them and the mapping of national standards to international EN / ISO standards. The complexity of meeting industrial norms is also just about to reach new

levels with massive changes afoot in the automotive industry. Rapid advances in electrification, connectivity, power train development and autonomy are turning the industry on its head. The major automotive test houses such as HORIBA MIRA and Millbrook are investing eye-watering amounts of money to be in a position to provide controlled test facilities for areas of technology that had previously no connection with the automotive industry. HORIBA MIRA has a dedicated team working on cyber-security and Millbrook

has just opened its 5G enabled connected vehicle test facility. Talking recently to Alex Burns, the former F1 veteran and current CEO of Millbrook, while a McLaren sports car was whizzing round the “bowl” at 170mph beaming real time video, he told me the proving ground is venturing into uncharted waters to stay ahead of industry developments. “A lot of the companies taking part in this development are in areas of technology we’ve never touched on before, this is why the partnership approach is so important,” he says. The projects the automotive giants are working on will result in a new set of

norms, churn in the regulatory landscape and the need for all affected companies to take a collaborative approach to step into unfamiliar areas of technology. Test houses are set to play an important role by providing expertise as well as test services and by creating links in collaborative industrial partnerships.
