Snap-in cable glands gain EMC protection


A new series of cable mounting glands for cabinets provides harsh environment, UV, ozone and EMC protection for industrial equipment.


of the cabinet through the panel cutout before they could be preassembled outside. After that, they were pushed back and fixed into the bulkhead mounted housing. With the new metal hoods and housings, the insulation bodies are inserted into a plastic holding frame that snaps safely into the aluminium die-cast enclosure and is supported and retained by a lug. In this way, the pre-assembly can take place before performing any cabling operations within the cabinet and the assembled loom can be easily snapped into the housing from the outside.

ndustrial engineers, machine builders and equipment manufacturers are rising to the challenge of greater connectivity in manufacturing, processing and distribution environments with the placement of more stringent specifications on the components and


assemblies they need so that the equipment performs as it should do in increasingly demanding circumstances. With the increase in digital manufacturing as part of


Industry 4.0, the density of electronic communication equipment is increasing and EMC protection is gaining more importance for equipment suppliers. Industrial connectivity specialist, Harting, is now offering an easier way for designers and engineers to manage cabling entering and exiting metal control cabinets and housings with a new series of connectors and mounting systems.


EASIER MOUNTING OPTIONS The company is now providing metal hoods and housings on its Han B and M series of connectors that offer rear mounting options for contact inserts, greatly simplifying the preassembly of interfaces for control cabinets. With the new Han metal housings, it is possible to lock the


prefabricated inserts directly from the rear into the bulkhead mounting housing from the interior of a control cabinet. In the past, these inserts had to be positioned from the inside


ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION In order to achieve protection in accordance with class IP65/66 and also to guard against the effects of UV radiation and ozone, the flange rubber seal of the Han B connector is laid completely into the interior of the housings. The housings of the Han M series were redesigned according to the same principles. The Han M hoods and housings differ from their Han B counterparts only by the fact that they are even more suitable for harsh environments, for example, on the exterior of wind turbines.


EMC PROTECTION BY THE END OF THE YEAR According to Harting, by the end of this year, rear mounting inserts with continuous 360° degree shielding will also be available. With Han EMC, the shielding is always on the metal hood or housing. The hoods, in addition, need special EMC cable glands.


With EMC protection already built into the hoods and the housings, there are more options available to the engineer to combat the effects of RFI in the cabinet and cabling design.


REDUCING ASSEMBLY COST With these three new mounting options, the preassembly of cabinet components becomes increasingly efficient as more elements of control cabinets, machine modules and cable harnesses can now be prefabricated separately. As a result, the proportion of prefabrication increases and the overall assembly costs decrease, according to Harting. For ease of selection, the new and old variants of the


Han metal hoods and housings are fully compatible with each other and so the new designs can be used as a direct replacement in existing specifications.
