EDITOR’S NOTE Mental health a focus for new Health Secretary
Since the last edition of mental health & dementia facilities magazine the Government has seen the appointment of a new Health Secretary, with Matt Hancock taking on the role.
And, against a backdrop of increased pressure on services (p7), he has made it clear that mental health is a priority area.
Work has already begun on a 10-year plan for the NHS, and Professor Sir Simon Wessely is part-way through his review of the Mental Health Act.
But Hancock has also said he is committed to enhancing services and improving access. This will be delivered, he says, partly through the increased use of technology; the publication of a social care green paper which will target the need for better support for people with dementia; and via a review of spending.
How this will directly impact on the estate is not yet known, but it must surely be the case that to improve service delivery, you’ve got to start with an environment that is fit for purpose. Further comment on this is expected over the coming months, and mhdf will continue to report on this.

In this edition, a key focus is the patient environment. Read on to find out how landscaping projects and providing access to nature and views of the outdoors can have a tremendously-positive impact on the health and wellbeing of people with dementia and mental health conditions, as well as the staff and other carers who look after them (p17).
We have also spoken to the authors of a new book exploring how interior design solutions for psychiatric treatment rooms differ greatly around the world (p11).
Other indepth features include a focus on modern access control solutions which help to protect both staff and patients in mental health environments (p21).
As usual there is also an overview of the latest construction projects (p9) and a preview of the 2018 mental health & dementia facilities forum (p14).
This hugely-popular event creates a productive networking environment through which suppliers offering specialist mental health and dementia products and services are given the opportunity to meet key decision-makers involved in the design and construction of health and care facilities.
As well as networking opportunities there are also speaker sessions, during which, experts from across the globe will examine the challenges and opportunities of working within these very-specialist sectors
