President’s Foreword It gives me great pleasure to introduce the 2017 edition of the Society’s Annual Review.
This year is the “Year of the Navy” and we have taken this as the theme for this edition. It is only fitting because many of SMI’s members provide equipment and support not only to the Royal Navy but also the many navies of other nation states around the world.

SMI is grateful to the editorial contributors for helping to illustrate the broad range of activities which fall to the Royal Navy in ensuring it has the capability to meet the mission demands of a modern navy especially when operating far from UK shores. The articles provide an insight into a year in the life of DE&S Ship Acquisition, maritime autonomy for the Royal Navy, the incredibly complex Dreadnought Class submarine, future fleet auxiliary support, new innovations and how the RN can ensure it is able to function many miles from the UK. Finally you will be able to read about the new polar research ship, which has been designed to ensure the UK’s strategic interests are maintained in Antarctica.
A key role SMI undertakes is in engaging with government on behalf of its membership and one policy initiative which has occupied much time this last year has been the impending publication of the Industrial Strategy and a key component within that of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSBS). The NSBS will take forward Sir John Parker’s independent report into what needs to be done to ensure the UK’s shipbuilding industry and its supply chain is fit for the 21st century demands to be placed upon it.
This year is also the year of London International Shipping Week (LISW) and SMI is proud to be one of the organising partners for this prestigious event which will be the focus for a huge range of activities promoting the UK’s leadership in the global maritime sector. Two years on from the publication of the Maritime Growth Study: keeping the UK competitive in a global market, at LISW 2015, the 2017 edition will be a demonstration of the progress that has been made by the many constituents of the UK maritime cluster to collaborate in the promotion of UK capability across the whole breadth of maritime economic activity.
SMI continues to support the industry’s marketing and sales to both the domestic and international customer. We run an extensive programme of events and manage the pavilions for all the major maritime trade fairs, and we regularly receive overseas delegations eager to do business with the UK. Therefore, if you are an international reader you are welcome to contact us for more information on how UK companies can assist with your requirements. Equally if you are a UK based company which is seeking new business opportunities I invite you to read the Chief Executive’s message and contact him to find out how your company can benefit from being a member of the Society of Maritime Industries.
I hope you enjoy the Review.
