The Scent of Summer
Give your garden an aromatic makeover by fi lling it with fragrant fl owers this summer.
The key to designing a fragrant garden is to balance all the different elements - scents, shapes, foliage and fl ower colours – and to keep in mind when each plant will be in bloom so that you have something of interest all year round. It’s also worth remembering that herbs such as mint, rosemary and thyme are beautifully fragrant and if you use them in cooking then it’s a good idea to keep them close to the kitchen. They are really easy to keep, and grow better for being picked. For stronger-smelling plants, fi nd a place away from the house or building that gets early evening sun. Jasmine is perfect for this as it has a sweet musky scent that grows stronger in the evening and makes sitting outside a joy. Another fragrant climber is wisteria that blooms at various times during the spring as does the beautifully perfumed lilac and magnolia. Roses are the crème de la crème of the scented fl ower bed and containers and can be planted in most places in the garden. You might want to think about planting shrubs near borders or paths so that as you brush past them their scents are released. Both lavender and nepeta (catmint) have aromatic leaves and are a great choice for edging as they have a sprawling growth habit.
Combining fragrances can produce an amazing mood enhancing outdoor space that also attracts wildlife such as bees and butterfl ies. For a tranquil haven a mix of mild- scented fl owers like lily-of-the-valley, lilac and rose can be the perfect choice, whilst for a calming and relaxing feel you could plant some chamomile, scented geraniums and roses as well. To excite your senses jasmine, thyme and orange blossom make a lovely fragrant backdrop and you can guarantee on year-round fragrance by adding aromatic foliage to the garden such as lavender, lemon verbena or scented geranium.
As many scented plants have Mediterranean origins they like being in the sun, so the timing is perfect as May sees more sunshine and longer days – which means more time for gardening. Here’s what the experts have on their ‘to do’ list for this month...
As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings RHS Spring is well underway now, and it’s a busy time for the garden. Spring bulbs are making way for the buds of summer fl owers, fi lled with the promise of colour to come. This is the month to plant summer bedding in borders or containers. Prune any shrubs that fl owered in spring as – so cut off any dead and damaged stems and then remove about a third of the oldest fl owering stems. May is also the time to plant out vegetable plugs and seedlings. If you sowed the seeds indoors or under cover, make sure to harden the plants off. David Domoney, TV gardener and presenter May is the month when warm days begin to beckon tender plants onto the terrace, but beware the cooler night temperatures, which will turn them purple at the edges. The process of hardening-off involves gradually accustoming plants to the rigours of outdoor life, and should not be rushed, but taken in orderly stages. Move plants from the greenhouse to the frame: prop the frame light open during the day, then shut it at night; leave the lights up; then, plant out at the end of the month.
