Swim, cycle and run to raise vital funds for vulnerable children


Fundraisers are being challenged to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles over the course of a month as part of a brand new virtual triathlon to raise money for vulnerable children and young people. The new Barnardo’s iTRI challenge kicks off on 1 June and is


free


to enter. However, rather than taking part in an organised race, participants will have the freedom to complete the set distances for running, cycling and swimming in their own time and at their own pace from anywhere in the UK. You can either do the whole distance in one go or you can spread the distances out over several days


- or even the entire month of June. Completed miles can be tracked using Strava and MapMyFitness apps or participants can manually log their workouts via their online profi le. Everyone who takes part is encouraged to raise as much money as they can for Barnardo’s, which last year supported 8,000 vulnerable children, young people, parents and carers in Wales. Sarah Crawley, Director of Barnardo’s Cymru, said:

Wildlife charity People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is calling for volunteers to take part in the its annual Living with Mammals survey. Last year the top fi ve mammals recorded were (in order): grey squirrels, foxes, mice, hedgehogs and bats. From April, PTES is asking members of the public to record sightings of Britain’s ‘big fi ve’, plus any other mammals they see, to aid future conservation eff orts. Volunteers can take part between Monday 1st April and Sunday 30th June, reporting the mammals they see, or their signs, in any local green space – from gardens and allotments to parks or green spaces near to work. The chosen survey site can be in an urban, suburban or rural location, so long as the area is within 200 metres of a building. David Wembridge, Surveys Offi cer at PTES explains: “Green spaces, and the wildlife they support, are important—they provide food, clean air and water, and make us healthier and happier. Counting our wild neighbours, and knowing how their populations are changing, is a health-check on our towns and cities.” Volunteers can spend anything from ten minutes a week at their chosen site to several hours and can take part either individually or as part of a group. Volunteers are asked to record their fi ndings online at www.ptes.org/LWM, which has more information on how to spot mammals, and how to tell a pine marten from a polecat, if you’re lucky enough to see one!
