Lesley Griffi ths announces consultation into banning third party sales of puppies
Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Aff airs, Lesley Griffi ths, has announced a consultation will be launched in the New Year into the impact of banning the third party sales of puppies and kittens. Speaking at the RSPCA Cymru Gala Dinner at the Pierhead on Monday 5 November, Lesley Griffi ths said the Welsh Government was committed to improving welfare standards for puppies. The consultation will look to gather evidence
on what stage the
government should intervene in large scale breeding premises and address concerns about animal welfare. It comes after the Cabinet Secretary vowed to look into banning the party
third sales of puppies
earlier this year. Lesley Griffi ths said: “Wales has led the way in animal welfare legislation and we’re determined to keep raising standards of responsible animal ownership. “I know there are growing concerns about the welfare standards at some
large scale breeding premises and I have asked my offi cials to investigate how a ban on third party sales could address these concerns. “Information on the supply chain of puppies is of particular signifi cance in this process. At what point in this chain will Government intervention have the biggest impact? The beginning or the end? Or both? It is absolutely essential we address the root cause of any welfare concerns in changes to legislation and I will launch a consultation early in the New Year.”
Barney the Barnardo’s bear shows pupils how to reach for the stars
Barney at Millbrook
Pupils at a South Wales primary school have been inspired to reach for the stars – by a teddy bear which travelled 21 miles into the stratosphere before descending to earth. Barney, the mascot of children’s charity Barnardo’s, was sent on his adventure by a team of engineers at Eaton, Cwmbran who launched him on his remarkable journey as part of year of fundraising. And on his return Barney and two of the team, Adam McBride and Sam Rowbotham, visited the school to introduce the well-travelled teddy to pupils and showed them a spectacular video of his journey beyond the clouds. Thanks to an on-board camera Barney’s whole four hour trip was captured, from his rapid ascent
into the clouds
to his amazing view of the curvature of the earth. It records his 150mph descent, slowed by parachute, when he narrowly dodged a dunking in the English

Channel before a slightly bumpy landing. The adventure certainly captured the imagination of Millbrook Primary as headteacher Lindsey Watkins confi rmed. “The visit was
inspiring for
the children. It brought the real world into the school and showed how working as a team and the use of technology can help solve problems. “It taught them what can be achieved. They were completely engaged and several of them said
they now want to be engineers.” Eaton designs and manufactures
