WELSH ART ON DISPLAY AT

Welsh art in abundance at the National Botanic Garden of Wales Antiques Fair and Vintage Market.Held on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th April to showcase Welsh areas of collecting including Welsh pottery, Welsh art and furniture. Richard Bebb will be displaying a rich array of Welsh paintings including artists such as Kyffi n Williams. Wales has produced a wealth of talented artists and the colourful works by Swansea artist Lyndford Jones is no exception. Lynford taught art for many years and now in retirement he is producing his own refl ective paintings of exceptional quality. His acrylics and pastel paintings show a love of the sea. His works refl ect an old tradition of cockle picking, when women would scour the beaches of Penclawdd on the Gower, looking for cockles. T e village of Penclawdd is famous for its cockle industry. Cockles are gathered from the cockle beds of the Burry Estuary and sold to local markets. T ere have been cockle pickers in Penclawdd since Roman times. Until the 1970s they were picked locally by women whose husbands were unfi t for work, providing an important income for their families. T e women used hand- rakes and a type of sieve known as a riddle to gather the cockles at low tide. It was dangerous and back-breaking work – the women were busy for 10 hours a day and endured harsh conditions. T ey were renowned for their resilience and ability to work in all weathers. Lyndford’s paintings will be on display in the GlassHouse, revealing the drama of cockling and his work catches the toil these women had to endure. Doors open at 10am and close at 4.30pm.
