Richard Heath of Ransoms Plant Hire, Chessington Ransoms Plant Hire is a family-run tool hire business which has been trading for

over 50 years. We hire everything from carpet cleaners to drain rods; you can even buy ten screws. Our largest hire item is the 9hp Honda-engined Gardenmaster cultivator, which is very popular, closely followed by its 8hp cousin. Significantly these machines are made in Italy and constant use makes for a lot of maintenance and replacement. Since the 15% devaluation of the pound in 2016, we have found the cost of

replacing worn items has increased considerably, and so far we and the supplier have been able to absorb these extra costs, but for how long is anybody's guess.

Carl Banks with his wife Barbara, Directors, P.E.T. Hire, Crewe The biggest issue that P.E.T. feel will directly affect its business after we leave the EU

will be down to the devaluation of sterling. I feel that its current low value is due to the inability of our government to reach a trade agreement. The knock-on effect of this is an increase in cost of imported plant and tools. In the

short term this will increase the value of residual hire stock, but ultimately will result in increased cost in hire and sales rates to our customers. The key to restore confidence in British business would be to sort a trade agreement, ensure customs run smoothly and this, in turn, will help our struggling pound.

Martin Lucas, Sales Director, GreenMech As an international business with subsidiary companies already

established in France and Germany, we believe GreenMech is well- placed to work through any likely implications of Brexit. However, as a UK manufacturer, we need the earliest reassurance that we can continue to export our products into mainland Europe and maintain our established supply chains without any disruption. In terms of compliance with

current legislation, again earliest confirmation of continuity in areas such as tariff-free trade, emissions standards, certificates of conformity and others where we already have standardised requirements will be essential.

Joe Wilmer, MD of Hatz GB Personally up to now we haven’t seen any effect of the Brexit issue with the

exception of the weaker pound. But I do feel the uncertainty will start to affect things as we get closer to a deal, or a no-deal. It would be in everyone’s interest to get this sorted one way or another. The worst outcome, in my opinion, is this dragging on - it needs to be sorted so we can all move on and start planning. The 24-hour news seems to be making stories out of any little bit of gossip.

We need to work on facts and to be able to ensure ‘business as normal’. A weaker pound means UK labour is cheaper for manufacturing, which has to be good for exports, but raw material and importing of goods has become a lot more expensive. We need strong government leadership to get us through this turbulent time ahead.
