New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Unstoppable

He has changed the face of yacht design and his racing scows have won everything that they’ve entered. Meanwhile, those voluminous cruising designs have been moving apace

Virgin Mojito 650: eco-friendly Mini fast-cruiser Builder IDB Marine and designer David Raison have shaken up the Series Mini class with their popular Maxi 650, which after early teething troubles is now a regular top performer (and unusually dry to sail… which is nice). Meanwhile, Raison’s custom designs achieved ‘simultaneous victories’ last year in the TJV and Mini Transat. Raison’s scow cruisers have also been growing in acceptance

with strong sailing performance allied to large amounts of internal volume. IDB’s most recent offering was the Mojito 888 – their small- est cruiser scow yet. Recently the Mojito has been heavily updated taking advantage of the latest lessons from the Maxi 650; plus there is now a nice contemporary twist with the partnership promoting a more eco-responsible method of construction based around coconut fibres, PET and cork. As a result the boat has been suitably renamed the Virgin Mojito 650. Some salient points… l performance features developed directly from IDB’s Maxi 650 l existing strong points of the Mojito mini-cruiser retaining the popular panoramic roof, telescopic drying legs and lifting keel l all using more eco-responsible construction…

The bonesVacuum-infused hull and deck structure. White hull (virgin, remember) in liner coconut fibre/cork/PET foam sandwich (manu- factured from recycled plastics) plus local moulded reinforcements. White deck in similar sandwich with moulded-in non-slip finish. Twin polyester rudders connecting to a single tiller. Downstairs Two full-sized single berths aft, ‘soft-furnished’ saloon and a generous 2m double berth in the bow. Opening roof panels for circulation and extra headroom in port, kitchen module, navigation

COMMENTS

Scow hull, foils, daggerboards, telescoping canting keel, rudder T-foils and, and, and… The things you can do with plants, cork and recyclable Sicomin GreenPoxy resin. Nice effort Peter Morton enjoyed his sojourn in the class last year (or is bored with Fast40s) A nice-looking new IRC/ORC design from a brand new Brazilian yard – one to watch The new Lift40 is much more ‘scow’. Two boats on order – one for Australian Rupert Henry

Contemporary-looking shorthanded tool par excellence with a full (light) interior The new Arkema 4 for skipper Quentin Vlamynck will raise the bar in this class

Just had a fun flight over the Alps by skyhook from Persico to meet its rig… A new IRC racer-racer-cruiser with suggested influence from Carkeek’s Fast40s Full carbon racer-cruiser. That carbon fibre stuff is definitely catching on Another optimised IRC racer-cruiser, deliberately pitched just above TP52 size We’d love to say more but life’s too short. She’ll have some beds and she’ll fly, ciao! This Verdier Imoca is pointing at The 2021 2022 Ocean Race for 11th Hour Racing Switchback’s half-built boat for the next Ocean Race might yet appear on eBay? Impressive-looking IRC cruiser-racer from an interesting but little-known design studio We know it looks stunning… and incorporates flax and wicker in the build Boat no1 of a series build of a new and stylish carbon lift-keel racer-cruiser The second British AC75 is still coming together, as are the three other V2 boats Interesting performance cruiser with foil-assist for righting moment and pitch-damping Carbon hull, deck, mast, rigging, sails, probably the loo as well. Just in time for next Christmas All of the ‘big’ pieces are now coming together in Brittany (where else – ed) B.O.G.O.F. One lightly used winning Ultim up for sale plus one brand spankers new one The first one-off custom Superyacht from Swan. Certainly one to look forward to Gorgeous indeed. Classic pilot cutter looks allied to modern design – with heavy eco-focus The biggest yet from Persico. And very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power for silent running Big, fast and fruity-looking new cruiser-racer from Rolfie. Will launch regatta ready
