Ben, as in Ainslie, as in Ineos Team UK, is one of the challengers for the next Cup. Ben was the first to launch an AC75 test boat, a 28ft two-person version of the 75ft 11-person Cup boat itself. Good news is he has proved the concept will work in real life (a bit of a relief to Dalts) and it’s fast. But by Ben’s own admission, they have done a lot of swimming. As in lots of crashing and burning. New York Yacht Club are about to launch their own 38ft version for testing and development. So it’s all go in the learning department. The cost of these campaigns is always a good talking point, and to counter a few of the more expensive aspects of the boats some parts are one-design or, in special cases, even supplied. This saves money because the individual teams don’t have to do the research and design for these components.
This America’s Cup is not really wide open like the Deed of Gift Cups of 1851, 1988 or 2010. What we have next is more of a hybrid – part one-design, supplied, and part open ‘to do whatever the team thinks fastest and sailable’.
Dalts has been saying it won’t mean more expense than the last Cup. Can’t buy into that thinking because in the last Cup you only built one 50ft cat, and this time you will build two 75ft monohulls… and the crews are more than doubled.
But Dalts knows more about his budgets of 2017 and 2021 than I do. Just the same, I will bet him a beer the next campaign will cost more than the last one. Dalts, if I should win, don’t go down to the team fridge and chuck me a sponsor’s beer! One of us has to actually buy two ice-cold beers and we drink them together while having a laugh about it all.
Only three challengers. Perhaps another will join, but that has to be disappointing for the event. The money is part of the problem, but perhaps a bigger aspect is the unknown factor of how to assemble a team smart and experienced enough to deal with all the new boat challenges. Many of the top people have been taken already by the teams that have entered.
The timeframe is very aggressive too. The first day you can launch your new 75ft foiling AC boat is (and you’re going to love this) 1 April!! Five months from now! The first regatta in 2019 is required attendance by all teams. Lots to do and not much time to do it. But these are just challenges, not obstacles, because there are very smart operators on each of the teams so they will make it happen. That is a fact.
There is always talk of conspiracy theories with any action of the Defender or Challenger. The truth is that talk is normally rubbish. There is little or no conspiracy. They have the responsibility of making decisions so the event is successful, and those decisions don’t suit everyone all the time so people bitch and complain. That’s just the way the world is.
Good news is everyone is onboard with the Challenger selection and America’s Cup races happening in Auckland Harbour. The 4pm start times will be a good thing for viewing locally. The New Zealand time zone does not lend itself to European live viewing. Just one of the challenges facing the next Cup.
So what do we have? Boats that will be exciting, but each team will be scrambling every second to figure out how to sail them. Learning curve for something that has never been done before is more than steep.
It will be exciting. Sit back and enjoy the show. We could all be witnessing the very future of yacht racing.
