New Boats Table

in association with the Spinlock Special Projects Team Something different With design input from Paul Bieker and friends this one was never going to be ordinary

On the first bitterly cold day of winter, in the darkness pre-dawn, the elegant Eagle Class 53T catamaran gracefully left Fast Forward Composites in Bristol, Rhode Island. Taking up the full width of the road, she passed mailboxes, street lamps and trees with little spare room on the two-mile trek to Mount Hope Boat Ramp. At high tide, with boards fitted and engines checked, she was lowered into the water while the build team and their families came out to celebrate the culmination of a huge amount of hard work. The next leg of her journey is on a ship to warmer waters for

trialling her C-foils and getting used to her Hybrid Wing… before a pair of canted T-foils are then installed for full-flying performance. Our team here consists of seasoned boatbuilders and composite

specialists from around the country as well as from boatbuilding schools in our own backyard – IYRS in Newport, Rhode Island and the Landing School in Arundel, Maine. We can count builders from campaigns such as Oracle, Luna Rossa, Artemis and Comanche, as well as mast builders of Alinghi, Luna Rossa and Young America. The 53T is a turbo-charged version of the Eagle Class that we now offer. Standard C-foils will be replaced with the carbon T-foils

creating a lightweight but comfortable dual-purpose platform that foils smoothly at low wind speeds and significantly increases the speed potential of the boat in medium to heavy wind conditions. The 53T comes equipped with our Hybrid Wing (issue 452) and fully automated foiling-control system for safety and performance. Achieving the capability to foil obviously requires the boat to be

as light as possible. Getting this light weight drives many decisions in our design and construction process. The build employs foam/ Nomex/carbon pre-preg throughout, with a high-modulus Hydrid Wing rig and foils plus carbon standing rigging. Dry ship weight is just 6,000kg (7,540kg fully loaded). Remember that this is a powerful and sophisticated 53ft foiling catamaran… The shape, efficiency and reliability of the foils are critical to

giving the Eagle Class the ability to lift out of the water, especially at lower wind speeds. EC 53 is theoretically capable of reaching between 25 and 35kt in moderate conditions. An automated rudder T-foil control system is included to maintain level trim of the platform in both C-foil as well as T-foil configurations. Tommy González, Fast Forward Composites

This one’s the full toyshop, scow hull, powerful foils and a stonking-looking rig Swift-looking café racer for shorthanded sailing. Lots of buttons and (gorgeous) varnishwork Tidy-looking development of the A13 Teasing Machine. The first boat quickly impressed Contemporary-looking shorthanded tool par excellence… but with a full (if light) interior Very light cruiser-racer. Spruce hull, carbon structure and deck and weighing just eight tonnes Spacious and stylish performance cruiser that actually promises some real performance This custom IRC56 will give Teasing Machine3 some trouble (inshore at least) Very good-looking one-off catamaran cruiser-racer from a shrewd Kiwi designer Excellent! Kojiro Shiraishi is building a new boat for the Vendée out of the Charal moulds Mini 6.50 star Jörg Riechers is adding foils to the 2012 Acciona. Scowish bow to follow Long overdue… top Class40 designer Sam Manuard’s first Imoca is for Armel Tripon Another Figaro frontrunner gets the big break – François Gabart protégée Charlie Dalin This will be interesting, a new Imoca 60 for Sébastien Simon managed by Vincent Riou Juan K has two more Imocas threatening the status quo – one targeted at the crewed rule With much team input another Imoca 60 that wanders away from the herd Second one out. Nimble-looking comfy cruiser-racer. Most appealing, Mr Bond Very light (17-tonne) all-carbon double una-rig cruiser-racer… Got that? Contemporary performance cruiser – maybe series production? Well, maybe… Interesting performance cruiser with foil-assist for righting moment and pitch damping Smaller (even lighter) Wally is aggressively styled and reflects the latest Maxi72s Thomas Coville is breaking with the herd with his new Ultim. Much anticipated puppy All-carbon build, hybrid power and lots of sail for this rather sporty little number Lots of wrapping paper needed – the first one-off custom Superyacht from Swan Radical… or maybe not? DSS does make good sense for a boat of this type – now we will see The biggest yet from Persico. Very light at 171 tonnes. Hybrid power means silent running Big, fast and very fruity-looking new cruiser-racer from Rolfie. Will emerge regatta ready
