Foiling Imocas and flying Mini 6.5 scows are clearly good for business… four-time Vendée Globe-winning designers Finot-Conq are working flat out to get onboard

After years of success for the designs of Verdier/VPLP it is easy to forget that for the previous 10 years it was the Finot-Conq office that dominated the Imoca class. Finot-Conq, and Groupe Finot before it, were a powerful force in all the open classes, including the Minis where their innovative designs wracked up numerous big race wins. However, business is business and for Finot the past 10 years

have been more about equally innovative production designs. The office is today decorated with more prosaic silverware including 2017 European Yacht of the Year for their Class40-derived Pogo 36 cruiser- racer. Indeed, there is a pleasing continuity to this latest award since many Pogo 40s enjoyed a second life with couples who preferred to cruise fast than dine with hot and cold running wine (Patrice Carpentier cruised thousands of miles with his wife Mimi on his Mk1 Pogo 40). Now, however, Finot are getting back to the racing scene with their

first new Mini design for a long time – a no-compromise foil-assisted scow. Plus a wholesale revamp of their 2006 Imoca 60 La Fabrique, which in the hands of young Swiss sailor Alan Roura added a respectable finish in the 2017 Transat Jacques Vabre to his prize as the youngest ever Vendée Globe competitor, finished 12th out of 18 finishers on one of the oldest boats in the 2016-17 fleet. La Fabrique was launched in 2006 as Britair and was sailed to

second place in the 2008 Vendée by Armel le C’léach, the first of two successive runner-up finishes by the Breton skipper (who then got bored and flattened everyone in the 2016-17 race in record time). Foura’s ageing but reliable 60-footer will grow its first set of foils

this winter, designed in partnership with America’s Cup foil specialist Mick Kermarec. While in the shed his boat will also undergo a rebuild of the forward half of the hull, removing weight and reshaping the bow to improve performance with the new foils. There will also be changes to the keel and bulb to reflect the latest Imoca stability rules. In their pomp Finot-Conq launched no fewer than 18 Imoca 60s,

making them the most prolific designers in class history. Their boats won the Vendée Globe four times, including two wins for a single Finot design, PRB, in the hands of Mich Desjoyeaux then Vincent Riou. This year does not mark a complete switch of emphasis back to

racing for Finot-Conq’s Vannes studio but it may be remembered as a first step in that direction… It’s an attractive thought.
