Four schools combine into one at Largs Campus

year marked a significant turning point for education in North Ayrshire. The ambitious state-of-the-art project

was delivered by infrastructure partnership, hub South West Scotland (hub South West) as part of its key aim to invest in communities across South West Scotland to build better local services and is one of the largest the partnership has ever undertaken. Bringing about a new education era,

the 19,606 sqm campus paved the way for the incorporation of four existing schools - Largs Academy, Brisbane, Kelburn and St Mary’s Primary- providing a modern and contemporary learning environment second to none for some

architectural practice, JMArchitects, the Campus, has been constructed on a steeply sloping site which transitions from a two-storey building to four- storeys, with principle learning plazas at its heart. The scheme was constructed under a

design, build, finance and maintenance contract which was led by main contractor, Morrison Construction after it was appointed to the scheme in 2016. Following a tender process, Morrison Construction appointed innovative building services design and installation specialist, Castle Building Services to provide and install a full range of mechanical and electrical services. Under the direction of Castle, the

completed building features several energy efficient technologies including roof-mounted photovoltaic panels and wood pellet-fuelled biomass boilers, both of which will contribute to a significant reduction in The Campus’ energy consumption. The Campus has two capacity theatres

one with 250 seats the other with 350 seats, a gym hall which is believed to be the biggest indoor school gym in the UK, a synthetic seven-a-side pitch and multi- use games areas.

provided full architectural design and lead consultant services, working alongside Kier Construction for the new development, which will include a two-storey teaching block extension consisting of 12 classrooms, a group room, an improved and extended main entrance, and revised landscape and interior design. Margherita Cesca, Senior Architect and

Project Lead at Saunders Boston Architects, said: “We focused on ensuring the design provided a sense of place for the students, and would help inspire creativity and enthusiasm in the learning environment. To achieve this, we have introduced a bold rainbow theme, which is sophisticatedly displayed in coloured glaze bricks inserted into light grey outer brickwork, with a series of seven coloured windows each representing one of the colours of the rainbow.”

Alongside the colourful exterior,

Saunders Boston Architects also designed an inspirational ‘learning street’ which will connect the classrooms and provide a moment of reflection for students between classes. The practice used Building Information Modelling (BIM), virtual reality (VR), and architectural modelling to bring the designs to life. The use of such technology not only benefitted the design process, but was also used to inspire the school’s students, who were invited to visualise their dream school through the use of VR – potentially inspiring the students to consider a career in architecture in the future.
