“A number of debates took place around the exclusion of LGBTQI across the world.

‘My heart was filled with joy’

Also attending the IUF Congress in June, alongside other

Unite reps, was Unite rep and meat processing worker David Imre. The IUF Congress was held in Geneva this year, and coincided with the city’s Pride celebrations, where David represented Unite as part of the union’s LGBT+ Committee.

David told Landworker, “My heart was filled with joy witnessing everyone taking part in Pride celebrations and sharing experiences of the same difficulties I’ve been through,” David said. “It is through this exchange that we can work together to improve the situation for the LGBT+ community, not only in the UK but all over the world.

“I’m so grateful to my national officer Bev Clarkson who saw my potential and supported me in coming to Geneva to represent my union’s LBGT+ committee,” he added. “Thanks to her, I will be able to support my LBGT+ brothers and sisters who struggle day-in and day-out in the workplace.”

Claire gave a very thought provoking speech for Unite below is just one section of her speech, “As a gay woman I am noticing the language being used against the trans community and it is very similar to the language I experienced when I was bullied relentlessly in school for being gay, people in society say to me ‘why does it offend you when it is about the trans community’ and I say an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us and none of us are truly free until we are all free.”

No bullying language here call – (l – r) David Imre, Istvan Imre, Claire Trevor
