Unite manufacturing reps meet with Michael Gove in battle against no-deal Brexit Manufacturing reps met with Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove in August to sound the alarm over the catastrophic impact a no-deal Brexit will have on their industries.
Unite convenors, representing workers from a range of manufacturing firms, from Airbus, to British Steel, Vauxhall, Rolls Royce, and more, demanded
NHS
Pharmacy workers’ strike
Pharmacy support workers at NHS Tayside continue their dispute after being on continuous strike action since August 19. At the heart of the dispute is a failure by NHS Tayside to acknowledge the duties of pharmacy support workers.
A flawed job evaluation scheme and a number of grading issues have arisen in NHS Tayside since 2009 which have
resulted in pharmacy support workers being paid at a lower grade.
The striking Unite members were hopeful the dispute would end after grading appeals could be heard. But just as uniteWORKS went to press, the appeals process collapsed and now the strike will enter its third week.
Unite regional industrial officer Susan Robertson said, “Our pharmacy support workers were ready to go back to work fully expecting to be awarded the banding grade they deserve. Instead, because of NHS Tayside’s incompetence, they will remain on the picket line.”

assurances on a number issues as a no- deal Brexit becomes increasingly likely.
Union leaders and reps were left with more questions than answers after Gove failed to give any specific guarantees on concerns such as the protection of ‘just in time’ supply chains, tariffs, anti- dumping measures, research and development, and investment decisions, among other issues. But Gove pledged continued dialogue and a meeting
between reps and prime minister Boris Johnson himself – a pledge that Unite will now pressure the Cabinet Office minister to honour.
Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said, “We didn’t get the assurances our members need about future job security after October 31, so it’s an ongoing discussion for us – but a very worthwhile one putting workers in front of government for the first time.”
