ITN renews contract to produce Discovery Education kids’ news bulletins

I

TN has renewed its contract to produce Discovery Education’s news bulletins for primary school aged children for another five years.

The bulletins are produced by ITN’s news production team who have held the contract with Discovery Education since 2012. They form part of Discovery Education’s ‘Espresso’ digital learning platform for schools, which offers a variety of teacher tools for engaging students in learning, including videos and interactive resources that connect curriculum subjects to current events.

Called Espresso News, this tool brings the world’s biggest news stories to thousands of primary school classrooms every day. ITN news production is one of seven distinct divisions at ITN, providing news footage and TV services for broadcasters, publishers and global video platforms. The team delivers a daily voiced bulletin to primary schools for the start of the school day, as well as a longer form weekly bulletin with studio links delivered in two versions that reflect the national curriculum key stages one

Tami Hoffman, Head of News Production and Archive at ITN said:

“I am delighted that ITN will continue to produce the kids bulletins for Discovery Education – it is a product we are proud of. Media literacy has never been more important to support children and young people’s learning as they navigate the online world of mis- and disinformation. The bulletins demonstrate how high quality, impartial journalism can enrich and inform their understanding of the world around them.”

and two.

The Espresso News bulletins cover a wide range of topics including climate change, the weather and natural events, fossils, archaeology, as well as PHSE and topical citizenship stories such as politics and migrants.

In 2023 so far, the bulletins have included a World Book Day special, which reflected events taking place in school across the UK; and heard from children about the books they love and why. As well as a signed bulletin to mark British Sign Language week. News stories covered this year have included the earthquake in Turkey and Syria,

Howard Lewis, Discovery Education’s UK and International Managing Director said: “Espresso News offers powerful opportunities to bring current affairs and world events to pupils of all ages. We’re delighted to continue our partnership with ITN, which brings a world-class news service to thousands of children every day, connecting the learning in the classroom to the world beyond the playground.”

THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III: WINDSOR PUPILS FILMED FOR CHILDREN’S NEWS PROGRAMME P

upils at a Windsor school had a starring role in Coronation celebrations this week – when they were filmed for a popular children’s news bulletin. Children from St George’s School Windsor Castle took part in a special edition of Espresso News – an award- winning news service for primary schools. Produced in partnership with ITN Productions, Espresso News brings the world’s biggest stories to thousands of classrooms every day, via the digital learning platform Discovery Education Espresso.

A crew from Espresso News visited St George’s School Windsor Castle to film pupils in the build-up to the

Coronation. The students have been finding out about the history of the event, and pupils in Reception, Year 2 and Year 4 were interviewed about their learning. The children were also filmed making crowns and taking part in Coronation activities.

Year 2 pupil Ezra said: “I loved being filmed and showing what I have made for the Coronation. I have enjoyed learning about the Crown Jewels and that King Charles III is the oldest monarch to take the throne at 73 years old.”

Year 4 pupil Holly said: “Today we were filmed doing activities for the Coronation. They interviewed me, Zac and Alex. They asked us about the Coronation and Daisy helped us to make crowns from newspaper. I learnt that King Charles will need to sit on King Edward’s throne which is made of wood and that the original crown was melted.”

Year 2 pupil Florence said: “I really enjoyed being filmed because I enjoyed talking about my sewing for King Charles III. I have really enjoyed learning about the Coronation and doing lots of activities in the classroom. I am really looking forward to this special occasion.”

Roz Money, Director of Marketing and Communications at St George’s School Windsor Castle said: “Through our unique location at the foot of Windsor Castle and our longstanding history of educating the Choristers of St George’s Chapel, who have performed at many royal occasions including most recently the Easter Sunday service attended by Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, we enjoy a very special connection with the Royal Family here at St George’s. It is a great honour to witness a Coronation and the students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the event, including using resources provided by Espresso. We were really excited to be asked to take part in Discovery Education’s filming and showcase some of our students’ outstanding Coronation activities to schools throughout the globe.” Howard Lewis, Managing Director UK and International at Discovery Education said: “We were delighted to feature St George’s in Espresso News and to share in their celebrations. Our special Coronation bulletin will bring this historic event to life for students everywhere.”

Espresso News is available to Discovery Education subscriber schools via its flagship Espresso learning platform. The Coronation bulletin will be available from Thursday 4th May.

Discovery Education has also created a host of new Coronation resources for UK primary schools – available within Espresso. Spanning a broad range of subjects – from History and Art to English and Maths – and including videos, interactives, and activities, these resources will help teachers to bring the Coronation to life, providing fun and engaging ways to learn and explore this seminal event.
