CONTENTS Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. After the excitement of Bett last month, we return to the classroom (well, the playground) to look at the alarming rise in student obesity. It’s no surprise to learn that one of the after- effects of the pandemic has been a significant decrease in children taking physical exercise, with a corresponding increase in childhood obesity. In our first feature this month we’re delighted to hear from Sports Slam ambassador and PE teacher Joe Danquah, who tells us about the recently launched Sports Slam, a new nationwide initiative from Sports Direct putting the participation and excitement back into PE. In our second look at the topic, we meet British Gymnastics’ Schools Partnership Officer Jessica Pearce, who discusses the deleterious effects of the pandemic on the health of our children, and explains how the organisation’s Partner School Programme can mitigate these and help children develop healthy habits that last a lifetime. Finally, our third feature delves into the always thorny issue of homework, in the company of Gordon Reid, Principal Teacher in North Lanarkshire and Co-owner at G&C Education, who shares his top tips for helping pupils sustain in-class progression when the school day ends. Elsewhere, as always, we have news,

views and our line-up of regular contributors, and a lovely View from the classroom piece from Race Leys Junior School in Bedworth, Warwickshire. Remember, we love to hear from you,

you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, as well as by phone or email. Enjoy the issue!
