ovus Property Solutions has transformed a former primary school building as part of a fast-track refurbishment to create a new, state-of-the-art apprentice training centre for The JCB Academy in Staffordshire. During the fast-track 16-week project, the team completely transformed the former Dove First School building. Novus refurbished the existing single- storey school building and constructed a new extension to the front elevation to create the new state-of-the-art Dove Engineering Centre. The extension, which was constructed using traditional red brick and features a pitched roof, was carefully designed to complement the existing red brick school building. It creates a welcoming new entranceway and provides plenty of space for apprentices to relax and socialise. Students at the academy have a longer day than typical colleges and as they are expected to stay on campus for much of this time, providing facilities for downtime and private study was a key part of the centre’s design. In addition to the extension, the entire interior of the building was remodelled to create a new internal layout, to meet the requirements of a modern learning environment.

GRATNELLS follow the star
C
hristmas is a magical time for children and end-of-term nativity plays give them a chance to express themselves in anticipation of one of the most exciting times of the year. Gratnells, the well-known provider of storage systems to schools, has added a highly engineered modular staging system to its offer for the education sector. Gratnells STAGE extends that concept from the desktop into the public space. From very simple low-cost installations that can be used as a speaker dais, a winner’s podium or a show- and-tell presentation, up to staging for bands, orchestras, pageants, raised audience seating and large-scale theatre, it helps deliver children’s activities, achievements and triumphs to an admiring audience.
On a practical level, Gratnells STAGE offers a quick, precise build of slick interlocking parts, a quality finish wood surface and smart use of robust plastics for weight optimisation and durability.
Gratnells also offers schools a variety of mini staging formats which can be easily used and stored in the classroom. The ‘Step-up’ mini staging module gives children a stage or platform on which to present, display and share their abilities with class and schoolmates, with an in-classroom unit that offers visibility and a presentation platform.
Gratnells believes that being ‘on-stage’ either as an individual or part of a group is one of the most valuable experiences of children’s lives, fostering a sense of confidence, rewarding excellence with a place in the spotlight and making the very best of group activities for performers, producers, backstage crew and teachers too.
