Highlights from the UK education sector 7 VIEWS

With VSO volunteer Dr Pauline Faughnan, and Patrick Hayes, Director at BESA

8 BESA CORNER Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. The main education news recently in my view is the fact that the government won’t now be putting its controversial (to put it mildly) educational bill before Parliament. The work of previous education secretary Nicky Morgan, it proved to be immediately divisive and unpopular with many practitioners and unions, and it’s to Justine Greening’s credit that the bill has now been shelved. However, in her words, “The Schools that Work for Everyone consultation, which I announced in an oral statement to the house on 12 September, remains ongoing,” so it looks as if the extending of grammar schools is still very much on the agenda.

Moving on to the issue – with Christmas looming, and the issue of getting the seasonal school performances ready very much at the forefront of many practitioners’ minds, I’m delighted to offer two features on performance and getting the best out of your students. I hope you find some pointers to help you overcome those pre-performance nerves! We have our regular contributors as always, and a great line up of comment and opinion to get you talking. We also continue our section on recruitment, and have some great jobs for you this month. Finally, we continue our series on the members of BESA (the UK trade body for suppliers to the education sector) with pieces from ParentPay and BSquared. Remember, you can get in touch with us via Twitter @EdTodayMag, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. We love hearing from you!
