New study reveals fatty acid supplement provides ‘learning support’ to children struggling at school

“Our review clearly showed that improving children’s intakes of a specific

formulation with an optimal ratio of 9:3:1 ratio of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids found in Equazen, had a marked beneficial effect on reading ability, spelling, behaviour and attention. Conversely, Equazen helped to lower hyperactivity and aggression which would tend to put children in a better frame of mind to learn.” Dr Derbyshire adds: “Equazen’s fatty acid specific ratio provides the

new research review just published in the Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences[1] has found that a simple dietary intervention – a fatty acid

supplement - Equazen™ – could make all the difference to children struggling at school. The review pulled together results from 29 randomised controlled trials,

the highest quality evidence available, which involved feeding children supplements containing different amounts of fatty acids such as omega-3s and omega-6s. Out of these, 22 studies involving more than 3000 children revealed significant benefits for learning, focus and behaviour. Author, Dr Emma Derbyshire, a nutritionist who specialises in children’s

diets, said: “Helping children to learn and focus is a central part of education. Given that the human brain is around 60 per cent fat, it’s reasonable to assume that the level and type of fats in our bodies will influence brain function and performance.

functional building blocks our brains need after the age of 2 as our brains, like our eyes are fully developed at the age of two. It is this fatty acid supplement ratio which has produced the strongest clinical effects especially among children with ADHD or learning difficulties, children with low baseline levels of fatty acids in their blood, and those who were already underperforming. Therefore, I believe that getting blood fatty acid levels right could be a vital step in providing learning support to children who are struggling at school”. Dr Derbyshire’s findings support a growing body of evidence which

suggests that low blood levels of omega-3s, typically caused by low fish consumption, are detrimental to learning and behaviour.
