HOW TO WORK TOWARDS A COMMON GOAL
The Bathroom Manufacturers Association is driven by a clear mission and purpose. There are two areas of focus - sustainability and product compliance. Combine this sense of purpose with a considered and well-articulated strategy, and the result is an organisation which is making an impact for its members.
We are proud to say BMA is a growing association, this is testament to the success of our sector, the appeal of our goals, and the engagement of our manufacturers. BMA now boasts more than 50 of the biggest and best names in the world of bathrooms, and a further 20 affiliate members. Across our membership, these businesses are very aware of the part they play in achieving the UK’s environmental ambitions. They are continuously innovating and researching the bathrooms of the future. Quality manufacturers also care about product compliance, and this is a message we are taking to Government so we can bring about greater levels of market surveillance and increase compliance in the whole market. At BMA, our members determine the direction of travel, and shape all our activities.
SUSTAINABILITY Two years ago, we established BMA’s Sustainability Forum, with members joining forces to address net-zero carbon challenge in the bathroom sector. For many people, net zero and water efficient bathrooms is not the most intuitive link but around 5-6% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions are from household water supply and use. The massive majority of those water- related carbon emissions, approximately 90%, come from how we use water in the home. Campaigning about water efficiency is one way the association is using the power of its collective voice to improve sustainability. This year’s #GetLavvySavvy campaign shows consumers on how to spot a leaky loo and maintain toilets properly to prevent water waste, with members sharing the campaign videos and messages to amplify the impact.
BMA has also launched its Sustainability Awards in 2021. A chance for members to showcase the changes they are making, and collectively raise the bar of achievement across the sector.
COMPLIANCE Compliance is such an essential part of supplying water fittings into the UK market and for connection to the water supply. So much so, that BMA has had compliance of bathroom products at the heart of its strategy since 2019 and members of the association spend considerable percentages of their budget ensuring their products meet the exceptionally high standards required in UK Regulation.
It’s our mission to improve levels of product compliance in the UK marketplace. All our members undertake a Code of Ethics audit, as a condition of membership, to make doubly sure our own house is in order.
On behalf of members, BMA is working to bust myths and guide all areas of supply chain from design, specification, construction, contract assignment and water undertakers, to make compliance with Regulation 4, under The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 properly enforced. Manufacturers can prove they comply by providing evidence from a variety of regulated approval houses. BMA has also established a Primary Authority Partnership between the association and Nottinghamshire Trading Standards.
