Cornish planning processes. We sent over the 3D Archicad designs to the planning committee so they could easily visualise how the design uses local materials that are sympathetic to the natural landscape and maintain the agricultural feeling of the site.” To help hide some of the structural aspects of the building and improve biodiversity, a green roof was incorporated within the design. This choice naturally controls water runoff around the property, enhances biodiversity, and visually extends the meadow across the structure.


Understanding the sun’s impact Laurence Associates chose to add in large expanses of glass to improve the cohesion between the inside environment and nature. Due to the quantity of glass, it was critical that they fully understood


the impact that lighting, shadows and the time of year would have on the property. They used Archicad to carry out a sun study that assessed the impact of overhangs and the site orientation. It was able to find the dark spots internally that would require artificial lighting solutions. Barry continued: “We have an in-house SAP assessor who helps us during the design process and the sun study really supported his work. Cornwall is promoting solar energy usage and energy-efficient homes, and we have a similar ethos to create the best-performing homes we possibly can. This includes ensuring the internal living environment is as comfortable as possible.” Laurence Associates also had to consider Part O building regulations, due to the


volume of glazing. The sun study helped them prove that the thermal impact of the sun wouldn’t cause the building to overheat. The in-house SAP assessor carried out thermal modelling. The 3D designs in Archicad helped this process by ensuring the correct dimensions of the walls, floors, doors and windows were input during the reporting process, saving considerable time. The Eyebrid is currently under


construction, but the design is set to maintain the agricultural feeling of the site while improving the biodiversity of the local area. It will also help showcase the high-quality materials that can be found in the surrounding Cornish environment. By focusing on a sustainable and energy- efficient approach, the family will enjoy a bespoke home that makes nature part of their everyday lives for years to come.
