According to leading heat emitter manufacturer, Myson, many homes and residential buildings still rely on a heating system based on the simple on/off control of a single zone, whereby one thermostat is installed somewhere central and controls all the heat emitters throughout the building. But temperature requirements can differ considerably from room to room, so the system fails to create thermal comfort in every room and wastes energy through heating unoccupied rooms.
Zone temperature control offers a practical solution that increases comfort and helps to save energy at the same time.
What is zone temperature control? Zone temperature control combines multiple thermostats, each controlling the temperature of a specified zone. Nabeel Javaid, Myson’s Market & Applications Product Specialist explains, “For example, in a building with Myson underfloor heating and radiators installed, you can control up to 10 different room thermostats using the Myson Unisenza wiring centre and controls, enabling users to set their desired temperature for individual rooms or zones. Heat can easily be focused on specific areas, such as the living room or kitchen, and minimised in rooms that aren’t being used.”
Key advantages 1. Custom zone temperature control allows users to create their ideal level of comfort in every zone. Using programmable thermostats, such as the Unisenza WiFi thermostat, even makes it possible for users to set up different heating schedules for different rooms based on their typical daily or weekly routines. 2. Zone temperature control saves energy and money by adjusting the thermostat in zones that are seldom used. Simply closing off unused zones means energy is only consumed where and when heating is required. enables geo-location, a feature that uses the smartphone’s location to determine the users’ movements, and automatically adjusts the temperature setting to maximise flexibility and energy efficiency.
Estimated energy savings Nabeel says, “To understand the benefits of zone temperature control, we simulated a house with four rooms of 25m² each, where every room exchanges heat with the environment through exterior walls, roof, and windows. Each room was fitted with radiators and it was assumed that heat is not transferred internally between rooms. The model compared three systems: a basic heating setup with one thermostat, a zone control system, and a system using electronic thermostatic radiator heads (eTRV’s).” In the base system, a single thermostat was installed in the coldest room (the one with the most windows). As a result, the other rooms overheated while the system worked to warm up the coldest space. With zone control, the house was
divided into two zones, each with its own thermostat and motorised valve. This improved comfort and reduced overheating. The simulation showed that zone control can reduce energy costs by 12% compared to the base system. In the final stage, each radiator was fitted with an electronic thermostatic head (eTRV) from the Unisenza Plus range. These smart, wireless devices connect to Myson’s Unisenza Plus Gateway and app, allowing remote monitoring and control with precise time and temperature zone control. Because each radiator is controlled individually, overheating is eliminated, and water flow is adjusted proportionally. The simulation showed that fitting eTRV’s delivers even greater savings; 24% energy reduction compared to the base system and an additional 13% saving compared to standard zone control.
