from the ground up: why early collaboration on a polished concrete floor matters
In every project, there’s one surface that gently carries the weight of everything else: Woody’s Concrete Company
Why it matters from the start Polished concrete sits at the intersection of architecture, structure, and craft. It’s both substrate and finish, meaning that early design decisions directly influence how successful the result will be. Too often, specialists are approached once the floor slab is already poured. At that point, key opportunities have been lost, from correct depth allowance, integration of movement joints, control of aggregate exposure, curing conditions, or surface flatness.
These are not aesthetic extras; they’re what determine whether a floor performs beautifully for decades or cracks, curls, or discolours within months. Early collaboration allows the design team to embed the floor’s needs into the wider construction plan. We can advise on mix design (cement type, aggregate, colour, and admixtures), slab specification, curing regimes, bay sizing, and environmental conditions to ensure the concrete is ready to polish, not fight against it.
