Temperature control valves are just one of the solutions


that can make buildings more energy efficient, as Richard Bateman, product marketing manager at RWC, explains

ritish housing stock is among Europe’s least energy efficient. Leaky pipes or an energy


hungry heating system are silently crossing swords with the UK’s efforts to become a more energy efficient country. In fact the goal to reach Net Zero by 2050 is highlighting the need for energy efficient domestic and commercial buildings. There are, however, solutions available that can fight off inefficiency while being easy to install.


TEMPERATURE CONTROL VALVES Temperature control valves can go a long way towards making buildings more sustainable. These include Reliance Valves’ range of thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) – such as the Easifit TMV 2/3 which is approved for domestic, commercial and healthcare applications. Despite best known for their ability to protect


end users from scalding, the ability of TMVs to save energy and improve the overall efficiency of a building’s plumbing system cannot be overstated. Heating up and supplying hot water makes up a large proportion of a building’s overall energy consumption, and so any steps that can be taken to make hot water last longer have a bigger impact than you might think. Installing a temperature control valve at the point


where hot water is generated and allowing it to mix a cold-water supply has a number of benefits. Firstly, this allows for water to be stored at


extremely high temperatures, such as in an unvented hot water cylinder. A tempering valve such as the Heatguard Tempering Valve from Reliance Valves, for example, can withstand water as hot as 99˚C. This water can then be mixed with a cold water stream and cooled down to around 55˚C to come out of the shower or tap. This increases the amount of hot water available over a longer period. In the case of commercial buildings, a thermal


balancing valve can help maintain the temperature of a building’s circulatory hot water system, which means that valves such as end point TMVs do not take in too high of a temperature, so they will have a much longer lifespan. This also means that larger buildings such as hospitals can have

optimum levels of hot water output, which is extremely important at a time when every penny counts. Moreover, this increased control of water temperatures creates potential savings too – just one more step towards making our homes more energy efficient overall.


UNDERFLOOR HEATING Underfloor heating systems (UFH) are a great way to make buildings more energy efficient. These can sufficiently heat a room while running between 35˚C and 45˚C, compared to around 70˚C required


extremely easy to lay and cover. Similarly, since the JG Lowfit system’s manifolds feature both 12 and 15mm push-fit connections, they do not require reducers to attach to the UFH system itself. Being efficient to install, the system can be up and running and saving customers energy quickly and easily.


LEAK DETECTION When it comes to inefficiencies in the modern home or building, there is no greater culprit than leaks. Leaks can cause plumbing or heating systems to not work as intended. However, the MultiSafe Leak Detection System from Reliance Valves is designed to detect leaks in the plumbing system, in turn shutting off the water supply and sending a real-time alert to the building owner or whoever has access to the technology. This allows for identification of potential failures and the ability to have them fixed quickly before any further damage is done.

PROJECT TO TURN RAPESEED OIL INTO RENEWABLE DIESEL RELIES ON HIGH EFFICIENCY PUMPS


A


major oil producer in Canada is undertaking a project to use local


canola (rapeseed) oil to create renewable diesel on an industrial scale. The anticipated output of the facility is more than one billion litres of Net Zero diesel per year that can be used to power vehicles, trains and industrial boilers. The expected outcome of the initiative


is a reduction in carbon emissions by three million tonnes annually, equivalent to cutting the number vehicles on the road by 650,000. 26 pumps are being supplied by Sulzer for


the project. Two MSD (BB3) models will be responsible for the high pressure and high temperature naphtha feed application, which is a central part of the catalytic process to break down the canola oil. Two BBT-D recycle pumps and a number of OHH and PRE process pumps will be delivered with a Duplex stainless steel construction to ensure extended service in the challenging conditions. The main pumping systems are designed for 2 x 100% operation, which means that the plant design


has no back-up or redundancy facility, so the pumps must deliver excellent reliability. Jayesh Kantharia, senior account manager at Sulzer, commented: “We are very proud to play a


part in the creation of this innovative renewable diesel complex that has such potential to help reduce carbon emissions. Using local agricultural produce to create low carbon fuel is a great way of maintaining our transport infrastructure while reducing the amount of greenhouse gases involved.”
