INDUSTRY NEWS CENTRE LAUNCHED TO ADVANCE GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN THE UK
The Net Zero Technology Centre (NZTC), Durham University, SHIFT Geothermal, and The Reece Foundation have announced the launch of the UK National Geothermal Centre (NGC). The NGC will drive collaboration between
government, industry and academia, championing the integration of geothermal energy into the future renewable energy mix, as a low carbon option for heating homes and industries, and power generation. The geothermal sector has the potential to be a significant contributor to the UK’s energy targets and economy, meeting 10GW of the projected heating demand and 1.5GW of the anticipated electricity demand by 2050.
EFFICIENT HVAC MOTORS LAUNCHED
WEG has expanded its motor range for HVAC applications to meet growing demand for powerful fans. HVAC systems are a primary source of energy use worldwide. According
to the International
Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), heating and cooling are responsible for around half of the global final energy consumption. Maximising HVAC efficiency has never been so critical. The new W30 Smart EC (Electronically Commutated) motor exceeds the highest IEC efficiency rating thanks to a permanent magnet (PM) motor combined with an integrated inverter. It is one of the few drive solutions to achieve an IE6 efficiency rating for output power below 4kW.

Geothermal expansion could create 50,000 jobs for the future and result in an annual reduction
of 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. The centre is now actively seeking sector
engagement to accelerate the uptake of geothermal projects across the UK. Anne Murrell, director at the NGC, said: “Already
in the UK, geothermal projects are providing stable, low-cost, green energy to homes and businesses. With its expert stakeholders from industry, academia, finance and government, the NGC will expand geothermal development, at speed and at scale.”

ABB and Cleanwatts Digital have announced a memorandum of understanding to build enhanced energy management and efficiency technologies for communities and buildings. The two companies will build solutions that combine Cleanwatts’ advanced energy-sharing platform with ABB’s high-quality energy management technology, such as the InSite energy management system, energy meters, sensors and electric vehicle (EV) chargers, among others. By leveraging both parties’ capabilities they will be able to offer a unified and scalable solution to harmonise renewable generation, storage, and energy-efficient operations. The collaboration will bring significant benefits for community members
including lower energy costs through optimised consumption of self-produced renewable energy, reduced electricity connection charges with minimised power peaks, and enhanced efficiency and performance of renewable equipment including energy storage. It will bring the possibility to seamlessly manage local energy use, control assets and loads, demand response incentives, and access to energy trading practices. “Working together, the companies will provide a joint solution marrying

Election and it is expected that this will have a major impact on the energy sector. In fact the race to Net Zero, renewable energy, electric transport and more are playing an important part in the manifestos of the main parties. Depending on who wins, will Net Zero targets remain the same, be increased, reduced, or scrapped
altogether? Will renewable energy generation be targeted for growth and how? What about nuclear power? Are there plans in place to increase the construction of energy infrastructure? Will there be greater incentives to buy electric vehicles? There are so many questions that need to be asked. No matter what the outcome, however, it’s clear the election will shape the future of energy in the UK.

At the Isle of Wight Festival 2024, GeoPura’s hydrogen powered generators (HPUs) are being used to replace traditional diesel fuel. HPU technology harnesses green hydrogen to provide zero-emission electricity off grid, or where the local supply is insufficient. These are replacing diesel generators to deliver reliable, large-scale power, with the only byproduct being water. Caroline Giddings, director at The Isle of Wight Festival, said: “By
introducing hydrogen-powered generators, we are taking a proactive step towards our goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. This initiative is just one part of our plan to aim to make the Isle of Wight Festival the most sustainable in the country.”
BAXI OPENS SOLUTIONS ACADEMY
Baxi has opened a new 10,000 sqft Solutions Academy at its Warwick HQ. This will increase its annual installer training capacity on the site from 600 delegates in 2023 to 2000 in 2025. This has a dedicated solutions
training room, allowing installers to get hands on with Baxi’s residential and commercial product portfolio under one roof. It also includes a fully equipped digital studio to support Baxi’s new e-learning platform, to be launched later this year.
