OMRON Awarded Gold Rating for LGBTQ+ Initiatives for the 6th Consecutive Year

OMRON is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Gold Standard Workplace rating under the PRIDE Index for the sixth consecutive year. This recognition reflects OMRON’s ongoing commitment to promoting diversity and inclusivity within the workplace. The PRIDE Index evaluates initiatives across five key areas: policy, representation, inspiration, development, and engagement and empowerment. OMRON has been particularly focused on promoting diversity and encouraging the performance of diverse human resources. As part of these efforts, the company has implemented various initiatives related to LGBTQ+ inclusion, such as organizing seminars to enhance understanding of diversity and revising programs since 2015. Optimising energy in electric boosting and melting systems

Energy saving solutions with Hörmann Docking Before Opening

With energy costs continuing to have a significant impact on UK business, the Hörmann Docking Before Opening system (DOBO) provides an energy saving solution for loading bay operations. The DOBO system has been designed to allow lorries to dock on a loading bay before their rear doors are opened, significantly reducing heat loss through the bay doors along with providing increased security and improved safety.

Drivers are guided into position on the loading bay by the Hörmann docking assistance system which operates via sensors in the loading bay door linked to traffic lights. Green directs the driver to reverse onto the bay, amber indicates when the lorry is nearly in position and red is for the optimum position for docking. Safety is improved by removing the need for the driver to get out of the cab to open the doors prior to reversing onto the bay.

Once the lorry is on the loading bay an inflatable dock seal surrounds the vehicle on three sides creating an effective barrier against the external environment. The vehicle is now docked with both the loading bay door and the truck doors still closed.

Like all industries, pressure to decarbonise is imminent. And glass manufacturing is no exception, with the objective to attain carbon neutrality by 2050. Not only does decarbonisation benefit wider industry and society, but when done correctly, also provides efficiency and cost benefits. In this article, Mikael Le Guern, Global Glass Business Development Manager at Eurotherm, a company acquired by industrial technology company Watlow, explains how installing power boxes close to furnace electrodes can help glassmakers improve energy efficiency and reduce costs, compared to traditional power system designs.

As a result of pressure to decarbonise, we are seeing more requirements to significantly increase electrical boosting for facilities all over the world. Certainly, for large glass production companies, their total CO2 emissions are the aggregate emissions of all their plants and facilities globally.

With furnace campaigns lasting between ten and 18 years before the next rebuild or cold repair and with only a few upcoming greenfield projects, the opportunities for these companies to implement carbon-reducing solutions are limited. Currently, whenever a repair is due, many glass companies are already considering their options to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly by increasing electrical boosting.

The other movement happening in the marketplace is that all types of glass producers are looking into these issues. Years ago, the size of the furnaces and type of glass made it possible to implement small to medium size electrical boosting, on average between two and five megawatts (MW).
