s the number one meat-free brand in the uk, Quorn has a clear mission to help contribute to sustainable food security.
Through the company’s sustainability strategy, Quorn is working towards ambitious targets for emission reduction, on the road to becoming a net Positive organisation. One significant aspect of this strategy is a commitment to achieve net zero operational emissions by 2030 and, as a critical element of that strategy, the company turned to Powerstar, leaders in smart energy technologies, to establish the best solution for energy-related emission reduction.
nowhere is the climate crisis felt more than
in agriculture, and approximately a quarter of the world’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the food system, with livestock production contributing 14.5 per cent of human-caused GHG emissions - more than all forms of transport, worldwide. Given that Quorn’s mince product has over 90 per cent lower GHG emissions than beef mince and requires less than one-eighth of the land for production, the company’s sustainability credentials are clear. In addition to developing their mycoprotein-based products, Quorn is
implementing investment and change in their operations to reduce their manufacturing footprint. This includes moving operations to renewable energy, reducing water and energy use, researching by-product opportunities for waste, and eliminating non-recyclable and single-use plastics. To advise on the energy- reduction element of this strategy, Powerstar’s engineers conducted a review of Quorn’s billingham site in north yorkshire - the only manufacturer of the unique mycoprotein that underpins Quorn’s product range, worldwide. Following their review, Powerstar identified two
incoming supplies which would benefit from replacing the existing on-site distribution transformers. The recommended solution, once implemented, would lower electricity
consumption, reduce cO2 emissions and minimise energy costs - benefits which, together, would form a vital part of Quorn’s operational net zero emissions strategy. The existing, inefficient transformers were replaced with Powerstar’s Hv maX amorphous core distribution transformers with integrated voltage regulation. This increased the efficiency of the site’s high voltage infrastructure and the reduced voltage brought about significant reduction in energy consumption. The importance of efficient transformers is
highlighted by alastair morris, chief commercial officer of Powerstar, who explains: “Seventy five
