WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMPS TO ‘REVOLUTIONISE’ LOW-CARBON HEAT GENERATION T


he new Castle Park water source heat pump project is expected to revolutionise how Bristol generates low-carbon heat. The 3MW water source heat pump will be the largest project of its kind


in England – it will take water from the nearby floating harbour and use it to generate heat and hot water for local businesses and residents. The heat pump will be housed in an energy centre which will have a mixed-use development built above it.


When operational, it will contribute low carbon heat to the Bristol Heat Network which already supplies over 10,000 properties. Scott Lutton, operations director, North & Scotland explained: “This project is an ambitious partnership


between Bristol City Council and Goram Homes which will deliver rapid decarbonisation and make a substantial contribution to meeting their carbon reduction targets whilst delivering secure, affordable, homes. This is particularly exciting as large-scale water source heat pumps are an underused renewable solution and this will be a fantastic showcase to demonstrate the carbon reductions they can generate.” On touring the site, Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, and Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, received a briefing


from project director, Hugh Thompson, and learned more about how the heat pump will take water from the nearby harbour and convert it into useable heat and hot water.

DEMONSTRATING THE USE OF HYDROGEN BOILERS FOR HEATING, HOT WATER AND COOKING

wo homes in Low Thornley, near Gateshead, are being used to show the use of


hydrogen-fuelled appliances in a real-world setting, with the semi-detached properties demonstrating the use of 100% hydrogen for domestic heating, hot water and cooking. Here, Baxi Heating has demonstrated its 100% hydrogen boiler to customers and colleagues. The company has pledged to make only products

app, providing homeowners with complete remote control of their vehicle charging. Working in combination with household needs, the system also allows users to input their electricity tariff details, ensuring vehicles are charged at the cheapest times in order to keep energy bills down. It will also enable customers to prioritise their electricity use depending on their needs using Dynamic Load Balancing technology, something no other electric vehicle charger offers as standard, the company adds. Dynamic Load Balancing technology will automatically adjust to balance against electricity usage in the home – for example, the EV charger will switch to a low power mode when household appliances are on. Should motorists


wish to prioritise their motoring needs, the Fischer EV charger also includes a boost feature, which temporarily overrides the charging schedule in order to ensure that the car is charged as soon as possible.
