INDUSTRY NEWS NEW ENERGY PLAN TO OFFER PROTECTION AGAINST SOARING PRICES


The new UK Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has announced an energy plan to protect households, businesses and other organisations from soaring energy bills. The ‘Energy Price Guarantee’ will limit the average bill for an average household to £2500 per year for two years, thus saving that average household around £1000 per year relative to what was coming via the Ofgem October price cap. A new fund to protect households who rely


on non-regulated supplies such as heating oil, households on district heat schemes and those in park homes will also be introduced. The ‘Energy Price Guarantee’ will, however, also offer


protection to businesses, charities and the public sector, who will receive similar caps for six months before further support is targeted following a planned review. Crucially, the Prime Minster also set out plans for regulatory reform and market interventions, such as creating a new contract for difference for renewable generators, to reduce wholesale prices. The most contentious issues are the level of the new effective price cap and how the unprecedented cost will be covered. Responding the Energy Plan, Professor Karen


Turner, director of the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for Energy Policy, said: “This plan offers some much-needed reassurance to UK households, business, charities and public sector


organisations such as schools going into this winter, and beyond that into what is likely to be an extended period of volatility and uncertainty on global gas prices. Crucially, it will also play a key role in shoring up consumer confidence and cushioning the recessionary pressure from that side of the economy. However, it does involve a further increase in prices – that is, this intervention focuses on preventing the problem getting a whole lot worse in the short term, and only sets mid- to long-term plans for ultimately bringing prices back to a ‘normal’ or even a sustainable level”. elcome to the Autumn issue of Energy Management. I’mwriting this just days after the PrimeMinister, Liz Truss, announced the


new Energy Price Guarantee, which aims to limit the average annual household energy bill to £2500. At


the same time, this plan will offer protection to businesses, charities and the public sector. Outside of my job as Editor, I’m also a wife and mother, and reducing our household energy


consumption has become very high on the list of priorities. In fact following the installation of a combi boiler last summer, removing our old electric shower, and even turning off lights and plugs when not in use, our energy consumption has dropped dramatically. But I was interested to read a recent report which stated the lengths people are now going to in order to reduce household energy bills - fromonly charging EV cars,mobile phones and other devices while at work, to opening up chimneys to warmtheir houses the old fashioned way this winter. For now,measures such as installing solar panels or heat pumps, buying an EV, etc. is out of reach for somany. But, what about businesses? I would be interested to know how your

SCHAEFFLER ENTERS INTO PPA WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY PROVIDER


Global automotive and industrial supplier, Schaeffler, has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Statkraft Markets, a leading international producer in the field of renewable energies. From2023, the company will obtain


photovoltaic power fromStatkraft. The volume supplied will correspond to 11% of Schaeffler’s total electricity requirements in Germany, constituting a further major step forward in the company’s bid to achieve full climate neutrality across its own production operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030. www.schaeffler.co.uk

GUIDING SCHOOLS THROUGH HEAT DECARBONISATION


To help support schools in setting achievable pathways tomore sustainable heat, Baxi Commercial Solutions has released a new guide entitled ‘Schools and the Heat Decarbonisation Challenge’. The report assesses the different
