QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES INNOVATION IN MANUFACTURING

Queen’s University Belfast is celebrating the relaunch of the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering Centre (NIACE), which is integral to the 10x Economy Plan for Northern Ireland. NIACE is the regional Centre of Excellence for

innovative composites manufacturing Research and Technology, and is delivered by a partnership between Queen’s University Belfast, Ulster University and the National Composites Centre. NIACE is supported by Invest Northern Ireland, Spirit AeroSystems, BEIS and industrial members. Professor Paul Maropoulos from Queen’s

University is leading the relaunch of NIACE. He commented: “NIACE is entering a truly exciting new phase in its development, with a team of core staff recruited to give the Centre the capability to deliver innovation R&D projects tailored to the needs of our manufacturing companies. “I am especially pleased that NIACE is

supported by a new partnership that includes both Northern Ireland Universities and the National Composites Centre. This gives NIACE access to the UK-wide High Value Manufacturing Catapult network. The Centre is also committed to working with the Royal Academy of Engineering to support its new Enterprise Hub in Northern Ireland.”

The 10x Economy Plan highlights that

manufacturing is critical to Northern Ireland’s economic future and that accelerating City and Growth Deals is central to post-COVID recovery. The Belfast Regional City Deal project, Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre

(AMIC), will bring together partners, expertise and significant new investment. Existing facilities, including NIACE, will be central to driving innovation across manufacturing businesses within Northern Ireland and beyond.

DEBUTS AT NATIONAL MANUFACTURING SHOW

FANUC Ireland is set to make its trade show debut next month, as platinum sponsor of the National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference & Exhibition. The show is taking place at the RDS Simmonscourt, Dublin from 23-24 November. At Stand F15, the company will exhibit the ARC Mate 120-iD welding robot, the CRX-10iA collaborative robot, as well as the plug-and- play education cell. A state-of-the-art VR suite will also feature on site, allowing visitors to

experience a life-size walkthrough of a number of robot systems. Tom Bouchier, MD at FANUC UK, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to be supporting this exhibition. Irish manufacturing is in a good position at the moment, and we’re thrilled to be showcasing some of our most cutting-edge technology on site. We hope to shed some light on the role that automation can play across a range of manufacturing applications.” Day one of the event will focus on automation, while benchmarking automation in Irish industry will form the focal point of day two’s discussions. As well as this, there will be keynote speeches from FANUC representatives across both days.

ALTUS GROUP Elsewhere, Altus Group will also be introducing several new portfolio additions at the show. With a long-term strategy for growth, the company said it is focusing its efforts on the Irish

territory by increasing its presence in the area and investing in new staff. Joe Booth, Altus CEO, said: “The region has

always been very kind to us with business and COVID has made us realise that we had to step up our local presence in the region to make the most of our terrific existing partners and maximise the new business opportunities. We have a brilliant range of production equipment from the very best suppliers you can choose, and so with our new local infrastructure I see no reason why we can’t replicate being the go-to partner like we are for so many in the UK.” On Stand Q10, Altus will show a number

of products including the Koh Young Zenith Alpha HS+, the 3D AOI solution powered by AI-enhanced high-speed 3D measurement capabilities. It is suitable for demanding production lines and it greatly improves process yields, removing the need for manual inspection. Another highlight on the stand will be the YJ Link YLM series Laser Marking solution.
